The LPR Remote Printing Process

  • A user prints a file from any application to a Windows printer. This printer is configured to print through "INTELLIscribe".
  • Using the print driver, the application formats the data specifically for the printer. When finished, the formatted print file is placed in the Windows print manager, commonly called the "spooler".
  • INTELLIscribe then intercepts the print job from the Windows spooler. Using this method allows INTELLIscribe to print to virtually any type of printer without affecting either the application or the Windows print manager.
  • Finally, INTELLIscribe spools the print job to the destination(s) configured in the "Virtual Printer Port". Almost any TCP/IP addressable printer or print server will work.

Unique LPR Features with INTELLIscribe

Shared Printing

INTELLIscribe transforms a users print environment into a print distribution center. This combination merges Windows network printing with TCP/IP printing thereby elevating the entire print environment. INTELLIscribe can accept print jobs from a Windows printer when the printer is shared...without being logged in!

Print Destination Balancing

Use this policy when you have multiple printers that are similar in print speed or paper tray size, and job sizes that are not consistent. The destination balancing policy keeps statistics on the amount of data sent to each printer. Any new print jobs coming in will be sent to the printer that has been the least used.

Round Robin (printers) Printing

INTELLIscribe remembers the previously tried printer and schedules the job for the next destination in the list. Use this policy when you have multiple printers that are similar in print speed or paper tray size and want them to be used in a predictable manner, perhaps because the job sizes are consistent.

Broadcast Printing

INTELLIscribe offers the ability to print a single file or job to multiple printers or print servers simultaneously. Now, from any Windows PC, you can print a single document to multiple users, at the same time, on different printers. You may also send a print job to the printer and a folder at the same time for archiving.

Fail-over Printing

Virtual Printer Ports can be configured to automatically reroute print jobs to another destination if the first printer is busy or refuses to accept the job. Use this feature if you have multiple printers that are in constant use. Many destinations can be configured.

Drag-and-Drop

Users can simply drag a "printer ready" file over a "Virtual Printer Port", by-passing the Windows print driver. This spools files without any modification to the file.

INTELLIscribe's LPR Printing Features

Easy LPR Client Reprint

Easily reprint jobs without launching the original application.

LPR Spooler Fail-Over Printing

Automatically reroutes print jobs to another destination if the first printer does not receive the print job.

Reduced Demand on a Network Server

Spool print jobs independent of a network server, freeing resources on the server. This allows the server to concentrate on other tasks while INTELLIscribe spools print jobs.

Command-Line Interface

Submit one or more files from one or more folders using the 'ISendFile' command line interface. This program can be called from any command prompt or an application created by you.

Windows LPR Simple Configuration

Easy-to-use "wizards" guide users through the steps of creating ports and associating printers. INTELLIscribe can be configured in a matter of minutes.

Advanced User-Interface

Allows easily viewing on-screen status information, including start and completion times, error messages, and job status.

Archiving

Archiving is simple: keep a configured number of jobs, keep jobs for a configured number of days, or automatically delete jobs after they print.
